The capital, Ljubljana, is a nice lively city with approximately 300,000 inhabitants. Entertainment and numeral cultural events (the Summer Festival), congresses and fairs give the city its character. When you are on a road around Slovenia, take some time off for a stroll through the old town centre and a cup of coffee in one of the numerous cafés overlooking the Ljubljanica River. And even if you stay in Ljubljana for several days you will not get bored as it is a unique starting point for exploring Slovenia, while at the same time offering a variety of possibilities for relaxation and fun in the evening.
Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia, is developing into a proper capital. Hotels of the highest category can cater for the most demanding of guests. Maribor is not only a congress and cultural centre, but also an ideal starting point for trips to the neighbouring Austria, Hungary or Croatia. Beside numerous other sights in the town, you can see the oldest Slovene vine and the biggest Slovene wine cellar. We recommend that you take a trip around the nearby vine-growing regions. Ski resorts of Pohorje are only a stone's throw away from the town too.
While you will be driving through Slovenia, take a stop and have a walk through our charming well – preserved smaller medieval towns like Škofja Loka, Radovljica, Kamnik, Piran, Kostanjevica, Štanjel, Ptuj, Idrija… or a bit bigger regional centres like Kranj, Novo Mesto and Celje… Beside good cafes, small shops and carefully protected medieval buildings, most of those towns have also old castles which are open to visitors.
