40% of Slovene territory is of karstic origin. The Slovene Karst, a small part of Slovenia, gives name to the so called karst phenomena. In some areas these karst phenomena acquired forms that are of particular interest for tourists and have been thus classified in this unit.
Here belong the famous Škocjanske Jame Caves that have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of their extraordinary beauty; the most often visited Slovene cave – the Postojnska Jama Cave, and numerous slightly less accessible caves, whose beauty will nevertheless compensate for all the efforts.
The intermittent Cerkniško Jezero Lake is unique too, sometimes it is there and sometimes it is not, depending on when you visit. The lake that for centuries has fired human imagination will undoubtedly not fail to arouse your interest.
The Karst is also known as an area of interesting small villages, fields surrounded with barriers of stone, it is the land of cured ham called pršut, wine and good food. The Karst is also well-known for the village of Lipica with its famous Lipizzaner horses: the Karst is something you will have a fond memory of for a long time.
